Rethinking the Judicial Decision – Dan Vogel Urim and Thummim Some accounts refer to the seer stones as a pair of stones set in eye frames to resemble spectacles Joseph himself writing in his own hand, …the Lord had prepared spectticke spectacles for to read the Book therefore I commenced translating the characters… History, circa Summer , The Joseph Smith Papers. Other accounts refer to a single seer stone by itself, such as this one by Emma Smith, saying that the translating process had Joseph sitting with his face buried in his hat, with the stone in it, and dictating hour after hour with nothing between us… Emma Smith Bidamon Interview with Joseph Smith III, February Published as “Last Testimony of Sister Emma,” Saints’ Herald 26 1 October Apparently the spectacle version was with the plates in the stone box. Some accounts state that they were only used for translating just the first pages of the Book of Mormon and were then taken from Joseph by the angel along with the plates, although there is no direct evidence that Joseph used the spectacle version of the Urim and Thummim for translating even the first pages of the BOM. The accounts were reported in some newspapers but the reporters likely confused the spectacle version with the seer stone version as many Latter-day Saints did. The angel returned the plates but not the spectacle “Urim and Thummim”. After this, Joseph used the single seer stone that he had in his possession from before the Book of Mormon plates were retrieved.

In the Christian Bible, the Old Testament books are arranged so that this verse is the last verse in the Old Testament, emphasizing the Christian interpretation of this passage as a prophecy which is fulfilled in the gospels immediately following. In the Jewish arrangement of the scriptures, Malachi is the last of the minor prophets, and is followed by the books called “Writings”; thus it is nowhere near the end of the Hebrew scriptures.

A testimony of the Book of Mormon can be gained by reading the Book of Mormon and putting the book to the test by praying about whether or not it is true: A true testimony comes from the Holy Ghost and cannot be denied. Although the Book of Mormon does not say how exactly the Holy Ghost will manifest the truth to people, many LDS believe it is either a physical sensation such as the burning in the bosom or just an intense feeling that it is true.

History[ edit ] The LDS Church began prohibiting the contracting of plural marriages within the United States in after a decree by the president of the church, Wilford Woodruff. However, the practice continued underground in the U. According to some sources, many polygamous men in the United States continued to live with their plural wives with the approval of church presidents Woodruff, Lorenzo Snow , and Joseph F.

Woolley Known as the father of Mormon fundamentalism amongst most fundamentalists sects Some fundamentalists have argued that the Manifesto was not a real revelation of the kind given by God to Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, John Taylor, and others, but that it was rather a politically expedient document intended by Woodruff to be a temporary measure until Utah Territory gained statehood. They make their argument based upon textual evidence and the fact that the “Manifesto” is not worded in accordance with similar revelations in the LDS scriptures.

This argument further holds that after joining the Union, Utah would have had the authority to enact its own laws with respect to marriage, rather than being bound by U. Before statehood could be granted in , however, the federal government required Utah to include a provision in its state constitution stating that “polygamous or plural marriages are forever prohibited. Senate in , national attention was again focused on the continuation of plural marriage in Utah, which culminated in the Reed Smoot hearings.

Smith issued a ” Second Manifesto “, after which time it became LDS Church policy to excommunicate those church members who entered into or solemnized new polygamous marriages. Taylor , son of the third president of the church, was excommunicated in for his continued opposition to the Manifesto. Today, the LDS Church continues to excommunicate members who advocate early Mormon doctrines such as plural marriage, enter into or solemnize plural marriages whether in the United States or elsewhere , or actively support Mormon fundamentalist or dissident groups.
