By Sam Lowry February 3, The show is well-written and acted, has a half dozen funny one-liners per episode, and delivers a weekly helping of science and nerd culture in-jokes. In a recent episode, Howard the NASA scientist erased several hours of data from the Mars Rover after inviting a woman he had met in a bar to come back to his office and drive it. His pick up line: Three of the four main characters are scientists with limited romantic prospects. Howard lives with his mother and inhabits an imaginary world where his Beatles haircut makes him irresistible to women. Not only is this not true granted I work at a science magazine but most of the researchers I meet are very cool and many of them are women , but research has posited that these portrayals potentially discourage kids from pursuing science past junior high. People love these characters.

Neo-noir[ edit ] While it is hard to draw a line between some of the noir films of the early s such as Blast of Silence and Cape Fear and the noirs of the late s, new trends emerged in the post-classic era. The Manchurian Candidate , directed by John Frankenheimer , Shock Corridor , directed by Sam Fuller , and Brainstorm , directed by experienced noir character actor William Conrad , all treat the theme of mental dispossession within stylistic and tonal frameworks derived from classic film noir.

The first major film to work a new angle on noir was French director Jean-Luc Godard ‘s Breathless , which pays its literal respects to Bogart and his crime films while brandishing a bold new style for a new day. Based on the novel by Raymond Chandler, it features one of Bogart’s most famous characters, but in iconoclastic fashion:

In the following equations, be sure that you use the same units throughout, to minimize that type of error. I generally use meters – kilograms – seconds. Beware that items like a rocket’s exhaust velocity are often given in kilometers per second, instead of meters per second. It doesn’t matter which you use, but be sure to use the same units everywhere. For those readers who actually have some knowledge of rocketry: Yes, I know it is inconvenient to use meters per second with all those annoying ciphers.

But I still used them throughout this site so as to give one less source of error for those readers who are new to all this. AU’s are “astronomical units”, the distance between the Earth and Sol. Planetary distances are generally given in AUs, so you have to know how to convert them into the more useful “meters”. For those who are familiar with scientific notation but not with computer scientific notation, 1. There is a handy table of these prefixes here.

The Grooved Spheres 2. Giant Stone Balls of Costa Rica Workmen hacking and burning their way through the dense jungle of Costa Rica to clear an area for banana plantations in the s stumbled upon some incredible objects: They varied in size from as small as a tennis ball to an astonishing 8 feet in diameter and weighing 16 tons! Although the great stone balls are clearly man-made, it is unknown who made them, for what purpose and, most puzzling, how they achieved such spherical precision. Impossible Fossils Fossils, as we learned in grade school, appear in rocks that were formed many thousands of years ago.

A fossil of a human handprint, for example, was found in limestone estimated to be million years old. What appears to be a fossilized human finger found in the Canadian Arctic also dates back to million years ago. And what appears to be the fossil of a human footprint, possibly wearing a sandal, was found near Delta, Utah in a shale deposit estimated to be million to million years old.

An insight into the human condition. LeGuin Not only does the book imagine an alien race, but an alien race without genders. However, this never stops the novel from reaching the high levels of characterization and prose that we expect not only from LeGuin, but from the very best of fiction. By the time the reader leaves the world of Winter, their world will never be the same again. One of the most visionary, ambitious and influential explorations of the universe ever committed to paper, Stapledon’s novel elevates SF to the level of a sacred text.

But it is one of those science fiction novels which can change the way you look at the world. And there are remarkably few of them. The story is rich and satisfying in every detail, the characters are unforgettable, and the language is so good that you want to read every sentence twice. I always keep an extra copy in the house, because when it gets borrowed, it tends never to come back but that’s OK.

By Molly Lynch In the early 20th century, it lived in fiction magazines that cost no more than a dime. These disposable magazines were the home of so-called “genre” fiction: The stories appealed to a wide audience especially the young working class due to overt violence and sexuality. It was rid of the stiff morality of competing literary fiction.

Established writers would contribute to the magazines for a steady paycheck between larger projects.

An Experiment in Modern Dating This book was not our our class reading list, but it was released halfway through the semester and we were inspired by its near-future musings on the state of social media. The Circle, by Dave Eggars, follows year old Mae Holland as she starts her new job at The Circle, a mix of Facebook, Google, Twitter and other social media and advertising companies.

The Circle campus is inspired by modern technology company campuses, where buildings are named after historical periods like Renaissance and Enlightenment and employees are encouraged to have all their social activities on campus. LuvLuv is a dating application that scrapes all of the known data about an individual in order to provide the searcher with information to help them plan good dates and win over the object of their affection.

For example, LuvLuv could advise you of where to take your date to dinner based on their history of allergies, or suggest conversation topics that they would be interested in. This also reminded us of a great short film called Sight , which combines these kinds of dating suggestions with an augmented reality display and gamification elements. Our incarnation of LuvLuv was an interactive website where we used search results of the online activity of one of our classmates to construct a profile where someone looking to impress him could find out everything they needed to know.

Part of this project was to see how he and the class reacted to this information. Although our awesome classmate consented to taking part in some sort of experiment, he did not know the specifics of our project. He was surprised to see how much could be learned about him based on only information he had put up willingly online.

We may have gotten him to consider changing his privacy settings! Of course, in the world of The Circle, there are no privacy settings… Below are screenshots of LuvLuv in action:
